Free love and folk-singing hide a small island’s dark secret in Robin Hardy’s bewitching folk-horror. Reissued in its 50th anniversary in stunning 4K, The Wicker Man has lost none of its witty, arcane charge.
Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) arrives on the small Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. A conservative Christian, he’s appalled by the residents' pagan rituals and displays of free love, especially the temptations of Willow (Britt Ekland) and the sinister leadership of her father (Christopher Lee) – and grows ever more fearful of what he will find at the heart of his mission.
This screening will be followed by a 20 minute talk on pagan ritual from Richard Sermon as part of Gloucester Folk Trail 2024.
Richard Sermon is an independent researcher and former local government archaeologist, with related interests in music, language and folklore. In this talk he will consider the Wicker Man’s influence on both popular and academic representations of our pagan past.
