Joyland (15)

2hr 6m Pakistan

Director: Saim Sadiq

Ali Junejo, Alina Khan, Rasti Farooq

Haider lives with his extended family in Lahore. Unemployed, sensitive, supportive of his wife’s ambitions, he is ridiculed by his stern, wheelchair-bound father, and older alpha-male brother. When he finds work, it’s as a backing dancer for Biba, a trans woman in an erotic theatre group. Taking to it as a safe space, slowly, Haider and Biba fall in love, with inevitable consequences at home. With luminescent cinematography that transforms the plainest of locations into something jewel-like, Sadiq’s drama exposes the corrosive nature of patriarchy in all aspects of traditional family life – sons, daughters, wives – and celebrates desire that can create unlikely bonds.
