A remarkable true story of Second World War heroism.
October 1940: When Italian submariner Salvatore Todaro (Pierfrancesco Favino) and his crew come under fire, a brief but violent battle ensues, ending when Todaro and his crew sink the opposing ship. But it’s the decision he makes next that’s destined for history: the rescue of 26 Belgian survivors – who would otherwise be left to drown in the middle of the ocean – and deliver them to the nearest safe harbour, as required by the law of the sea. Taking them on board, he’s forced to sail on the surface for three days – making himself visible to the enemy and risking his own life as well as those of his men.
