Dir: Mahdi Fleifel | Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, Qatar, Greece, UK | 2024 | 106 mins | Subtitled
Cast | Mahmood Bakri, Aram Sabbah, Angeliki Papoulia
Mahdi Fleifel’s (A World Not Ours, I Signed the Petition) modern neorealist tale captures the lives of Palestinian refugees with a humane and honest eye.
The stakes couldn't be higher for displaced Palestinian refugees Chatila (Mahmood Bakri) and Reda (Aram Sabbah) in this knife-edge drama. The cousins are saving to pay for fake passports to get out of Athens, but when Reda loses their hard-earned cash to his drug addiction, Chatila hatches an extreme plan to pose as smugglers in an attempt to escape their desperate situation before it’s too late. Part buddy drama, part tense thriller, Fleifel’s superb and very timely drama is driven by Bakri’s exceptional central performance.
