Io Capitano (15)

  • Gloucester Guildhall 23 Eastgate Street Gloucester United Kingdom (map)

122 mins

Directed by: Matteo Garrone | Italy, Belgium, France | 2023 | Wolof, French with English subtitles

Cast | Seydou Sarr, Moustapha Fall, Issaka Sawagodo

Oscar-nominated for Best International Feature, Gomorrah, Dogman and Tale of Tales director Matteo Garrone’s Io Capitano is a searing migration epic.

Teenagers Seydou (the captivating, award-winning Seydou Sarr) and Moussa (Moustapha Fall) leave Dakar for Italy. On a journey neither could have imagined, they experience the dangers of the desert, the shock of detention centres in Libya, and the perils of the sea in their pursuit of a better life.

Highly emotional and honestly felt, Io Capitano is filmed on a grand scale with incredible visuals, but never loses sight of the individual human stakes of the migrant crisis, aided by terrific performances and a script with contributions from first-hand migrant accounts.
