Art of Action Season
Gloucester Guildhall Cinema celebrates the ‘art’ of action with a season of curated film screenings profiling underrepresented voices and the history of stuntwork via female and global majority stars, women directors and stuntwomen.
Art of Action Season: Yojimbo
Dir: Akira Kurosawa | Japan | 1961 | 110 mins | Japanese with English subtitles
Cast | Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Yoko Tsukasa, Isuzu Yamada
The incomparable Toshiro Mifune stars in Akira Kurosawa’s (Seven Samurai, Rashomon) visually stunning, darkly comic jidaigeki classic.
In 19th century feudal Japan, samurai Sanjuro (Mifune) drifts into a corrupt rural town divided between two gangs. Playing off one side against the other, he’s stopped short by the arrival of one of the gangsters’ shrewd, ruthless sons, and as events spiral into violence, the samurai must choose a side.
Remade several times – including by Sergio Leone (A Fistful of Dollars) and Walter Hill (Last Man Standing) – Kurosawa’s exhilarating, genre-twisting original remains one of the most entertaining films of all time.
